On August 1, 1946, the Motor Vehicles Bureau of the Taiwan Administration's Transportation and Railroad Administration Committee was reorganized into the Taiwan Provincial Highway Bureau and was given responsibility for transportation on the island's public roads. It also took over the services of the island's motor vehicles frorm the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Bureau of Roads.

In May of 1947, the Taiwan Provincial Government was established. Following this, the bureau was put under the jurisdiction of the provincial Department of Transportation and became officially known as the Taiwan Provincial Highway Bureau. In October of 1949, the bureau took over the public works from the Provincial Department of Public Works.

On July 1 of 1999, our bureau was put under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Transportation and Communications for downsizing the Taiwan Provincial Government. In January of 2002, the Legislative Yuan revised "Directorate General of Highways（DGH）". Also establishes Keelung Motor Vehicles Station，Taipei Motor Vehicles Office，Direction General of Highways，MOTC.
